Henry Irving

Henry Irving (1838–1905) was an English stage actor and theatre manager. His performances and leadership of London’s Lyceum Theatre made him a leading figure in Victorian drama.

Ellen Terry: Ellen Terry was an English actress celebrated for her performances with Henry Irving’s company at the Lyceum Theatre. Her celebrated partnership with Irving defined the Lyceum’s stage identity.
Hamlet: Hamlet is the Danish prince at the center of William Shakespeare’s tragedy of revenge and indecision. Irving’s 1874 Hamlet established his reputation for psychologically detailed Shakespearean acting.

Mathias in The Bells: Mathias is the innkeeper haunted by guilt in Leopold Lewis’s 1871 play The Bells. Irving made this role, with its hypnotic visions and remorse, one of his defining performances.
