Henry van de Velde

Henry van de Velde (1863–1957) was a Belgian painter, architect, and designer who helped shape Art Nouveau and directed Weimar’s School of Arts and Crafts, a predecessor of the Bauhaus.

Art Nouveau: An international style of art and design, prominent around 1890–1910, characterized by flowing lines and organic forms. Van de Velde became one of its influential designers and theorists.
Villa Esche: A house in Chemnitz designed by Henry van de Velde for textile manufacturer Herbert Esche. Its architecture and furnishings display his integrated approach to domestic design.
William Morris: An English designer, writer, and socialist who helped found the Arts and Crafts movement. Morris’s reformist design ideas formed an intellectual precedent for van de Velde.
