N-Heptane

N-Heptane is the unbranched seven-carbon alkane C₇H₁₆. It is a volatile, flammable liquid used as a nonpolar solvent and as the zero-octane reference in fuel-rating tests.

Alkanes: Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons containing only carbon–carbon and carbon–hydrogen single bonds. N-Heptane belongs to this hydrocarbon family.
Octane rating: Octane rating measures a spark-ignition fuel’s resistance to engine knock relative to reference fuel blends. N-Heptane defines the zero-octane end of the primary comparison scale.
