Heraclius

Heraclius was Byzantine emperor from 610 to 641. He defeated the Sasanian Empire in a long war, then lost Syria, Egypt, and other territories to Arab conquests.

Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628: A war between the Byzantine and Sasanian empires that ended in Byzantine victory under Heraclius. Heraclius’s campaigns reversed the Persian occupation of Byzantine provinces and culminated in peace in 628.
Theme system: A Byzantine system of provincial military administration that developed in the seventh century. Later tradition linked its beginnings to Heraclius, though its development was gradual and uncertain.
