Herbert Hoover

Herbert Hoover was the 31st president of the United States, serving from 1929 to 1933. A mining engineer and humanitarian, he led major food-relief efforts before entering the presidency.

Great Depression: A worldwide economic crisis that began in 1929 and lasted through much of the 1930s. The crash and ensuing depression dominated Hoover’s presidency.
Stanford University: A private research university founded in California in 1885. Hoover was among its first students and graduated with a geology degree in 1895.
Franklin D. Roosevelt: The 32nd president of the United States, who served from 1933 to 1945. Roosevelt defeated Hoover in 1932 and replaced him as president.
Hoover Institution: A public-policy research center at Stanford University, founded in 1919 as the Hoover War Collection. Hoover established the collection that developed into this institution.
Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act: A 1930 United States law that sharply raised tariffs on many imported goods. Hoover signed the tariff, which worsened international trade contraction.
Mining engineering: The engineering discipline concerned with extracting minerals from the earth safely and efficiently. Hoover built his early career as a mining engineer and consultant.
Calvin Coolidge: The 30th president of the United States, serving from 1923 to 1929. Hoover served as commerce secretary throughout Coolidge’s presidency.
Hoover Dam: A concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River, completed in 1936 and named for Herbert Hoover. Its name reflects Hoover’s earlier role in the project’s development as commerce secretary.
Reconstruction Finance Corporation: A federal agency established in 1932 to lend money to banks, railroads, and other institutions. Hoover created it to support institutions and revive credit during the depression.
Chinese famine of 1907: A severe famine in northern China that prompted international relief efforts in 1907. Hoover helped organize food relief, an early example of his humanitarian work.
