Herbicide

A substance that kills or inhibits plants, especially weeds. Herbicides act through specific biological targets or broader forms of plant injury.

Photosystem II inhibitors: Herbicides that block electron transport at photosystem II, disrupting photosynthesis. This major herbicide group kills plants by interrupting light-driven energy conversion.
Pre-emergence herbicide: A herbicide applied before target weeds emerge from the soil. It prevents early weed establishment, often by acting on germinating seedlings.
Mechanical weed control: Weed management through physical actions such as cultivation, mowing, or hand removal. It removes or damages weeds without relying on chemical herbicide activity.
Herbicide-resistant weeds: Weed populations that survive herbicides because resistance traits have become common. Repeated use of the same mode of action can select these populations.
2,4-D: A synthetic auxin herbicide introduced during the 1940s and widely used against broadleaf weeds. Its introduction marked an early stage in modern selective chemical weed control.
Acetolactate synthase inhibitors: Herbicides that inhibit acetolactate synthase, an enzyme needed to make branched-chain amino acids. They halt growth by blocking amino-acid production in susceptible plants.
Post-emergence herbicide: A herbicide applied after target plants have emerged. It allows treatment of visible weeds during crop or landscape growth.
Biological weed control: The use of living organisms or their products to suppress unwanted plants. It controls weeds through biological agents rather than conventional herbicide application.
Herbicide drift: The movement of herbicide droplets or vapors away from the intended application area. Drift can injure neighboring crops, gardens, or wild plants.
Chemical weed control: The suppression of unwanted plants using chemical substances. Herbicides are the principal agents used in chemical weed control.
