Herculaneum

Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town on the Bay of Naples, buried by pyroclastic deposits during Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 CE. Its dense deposits preserved buildings, wooden objects, and human remains.

Villa of the Papyri: A large Roman villa near Herculaneum whose carbonized library contained hundreds of ancient scrolls. Its scroll collection makes this Herculaneum-area villa the town’s most celebrated archaeological site.
Mount Vesuvius: An active volcano east of Naples, famous for its destructive eruption in 79 CE. Its eruption buried Herculaneum beneath hot volcanic material.
