Herero and Nama genocide

The German Empire’s genocidal campaign against the Herero and Nama peoples in German South West Africa from 1904 to 1908, marked by mass killing, forced displacement, and deaths in detention camps.

Battle of Waterberg: A 1904 battle in which German forces attacked Herero forces in German South West Africa. The German victory drove Herero people toward the Omaheke desert, where many died of thirst.
German colonization of Namibia: The establishment and administration of German colonial rule in present-day Namibia from the 1880s to 1915. It created the institutions and power imbalance behind settlers’ seizure of Indigenous land.
Herero people: A Bantu-speaking people whose ancestral communities are concentrated in central Namibia. The campaign killed a large share of the Herero population and dispossessed survivors.
Armenian genocide: The mass deportation and killing of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Its later international recognition contrasts with the long dispute over Germany’s formal acknowledgment.
