Hermann von Helmholtz

Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894) was a German physicist and physiologist whose work connected physics with the study of sensation, hearing, and vision.

Conservation of energy: The principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or transformed. Helmholtz helped establish this principle through his 1847 treatise on force conservation.
Young–Helmholtz theory: A theory that color vision depends on three classes of retinal receptors, each most sensitive to a different spectral region. Helmholtz developed Thomas Young’s proposal into a physiological account of color vision.
Nerve conduction velocity: The speed at which electrical impulses propagate along a nerve fiber. Helmholtz measured nerve impulse speed, challenging the idea that neural action was instantaneous.
Johannes Müller: A German physiologist whose doctrine of specific nerve energies linked each sensory nerve to a characteristic sensation. Müller trained Helmholtz, whose experiments tested and extended the emerging physiology of sensation.
Experimental psychology: The systematic study of mental processes through controlled experiments and measurement. His quantitative work on sensation helped prepare the methods of experimental psychology.
Physiology: The study of how living organisms and their parts function. His physiological experiments made bodily sensation a subject of quantitative science.
Trichromacy: Color vision based on comparing signals from three types of cone photoreceptors. His color theory explained how three receptor signals can underlie many perceived colors.
Auditory system: The sensory system that detects sound and transforms it into neural signals and auditory experience. His resonance theory of hearing proposed that the inner ear separates frequencies mechanically.
Thomas Young: An English polymath who proposed that color vision depends on three kinds of visual receptor. Helmholtz developed Young’s proposal into a detailed theory of color vision.
Physicalism: The philosophical view that everything is physical or depends on the physical. His physiological research supported accounts of mental life grounded in bodily processes.
