Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was a late nineteenth-century initiatory society devoted to ceremonial magic, Western esotericism, and occult study. Its teachings combined ritual, astrology, Kabbalah, tarot, and other traditions into a graded system.

Initiation: A ritual or ceremony marking entry into a group or a new stage of membership. Golden Dawn members advanced through grades by undergoing staged initiations.
William Wynn Westcott: An English coroner and occultist who helped found the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Westcott was one of the order’s principal organizers and ritual authors.
Florence Farr: An English actor, writer, and occultist who became a senior member of the Golden Dawn. Farr led the Isis-Urania temple and helped shape the order’s later intellectual life.
Stella Matutina: A successor occult order formed from a faction of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. It carried Golden Dawn ritual teaching forward after the original order fractured.
Ordo Templi Orientis: An initiatory fraternal order that developed from late nineteenth-century European occult and Masonic currents. It offered a neighboring initiatory structure but developed its own rites and doctrine.
Ceremonial magic: A form of ritual magic using formal procedures, symbolic tools, and prescribed words or gestures. The order organized much of its practice around elaborate magical rites.
Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers: A British occultist and translator who became a leading founder and teacher of the Golden Dawn. Mathers shaped its rituals and later led its central temple organization.
William Butler Yeats: An Irish poet and playwright whose work drew on mythology, spiritualism, and esoteric traditions. Yeats joined the order and pursued its ritual practice alongside his literary career.
A∴A∴: An initiatory magical order founded by Aleister Crowley and George Cecil Jones in 1907. Crowley built this later organization partly from practices and ideas learned in the Golden Dawn.
Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia: An English Rosicrucian society for Christian Master Masons, founded in the nineteenth century. Its Masonic membership restriction contrasts with the Golden Dawn’s broader admission.
