Herod the Great

Herod the Great was a Roman client king of Judea from 37 to 4 BCE. He secured his rule through Roman alliances and monumental building, including the expansion of the Second Temple.

Hasmonean dynasty: A Jewish ruling dynasty that governed Judea from the second century BCE until Roman intervention in 63 BCE. Herod’s rise followed the dynasty’s collapse and his marriage into its royal family.
Mark Antony: A Roman politician and general who formed part of the Second Triumvirate and ruled Rome’s eastern territories. Antony helped secure Herod’s appointment as king in 40 BCE.
Herodian Temple: The greatly enlarged Second Temple complex in Jerusalem, begun under Herod the Great. The expanded sanctuary made Jerusalem a monumental center while honoring Jewish worship.

Augustus: Rome’s first emperor, who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE. After defeating Antony, Augustus confirmed Herod’s kingship and enlarged his territory.
Caesarea Maritima: A planned Mediterranean port city in Judea built by Herod the Great. Its harbor and Roman-style urban design connected Herod’s kingdom to imperial commerce.
Mariamne I: A Hasmonean princess and wife of Herod the Great, executed by her husband in 29 BCE. Her marriage connected Herod to the dynasty whose surviving claims threatened his rule.
Herod's kingdom: The territories governed by Herod the Great, which Rome divided among his heirs after his death. The division exposed the instability of a realm held together by Herod’s personal authority.
