Herpetoculture

Herpetoculture is the keeping and breeding of reptiles and amphibians in captivity. It combines husbandry, enclosure design, nutrition, and, for breeding, reproduction management.

Herpetology: The scientific study of reptiles and amphibians. Herpetoculture applies knowledge drawn from the broader study of these animals.
Vivarium: An enclosed habitat designed to maintain living organisms under controlled conditions. A vivarium provides the physical setting for controlled captive care.
Conservation breeding: The managed reproduction of threatened species to support their conservation. Some programs breed at-risk reptiles and amphibians for carefully planned conservation efforts.
Wildlife conservation: The protection and management of wild species and their habitats. Captive care can complement conservation, but it does not replace protecting natural habitats.
Thermoregulation: The regulation of body temperature through physiological and behavioral processes. Temperature gradients let ectothermic animals regulate body heat in enclosures.
Environmental enrichment: Changes to an animal’s environment that encourage species-typical behavior and activity. Climbing structures, hiding places, and foraging opportunities reduce behavioral deprivation.
Amphibian Ark: A global initiative coordinating ex situ conservation programs for threatened amphibians. Its rescue programs use captive care to safeguard amphibians facing imminent extinction.
Animal welfare: The physical and mental condition of an animal in relation to how it lives and is treated. Welfare standards help evaluate whether captive conditions meet animals’ needs.
Humidity: The amount of water vapor in the air. Humidity affects hydration, shedding, respiration, and egg development in captive species.
Brumation: A period of reduced activity in some ectotherms during cool conditions. Some breeding programs use seasonal cooling to reproduce natural annual cycles.
