Hexadecimal

Hexadecimal is a base-16 numeral system that uses the symbols 0–9 and A–F. Each digit position represents a power of 16.

Positional numeral system: A numeral system in which a digit’s value depends on its position and the system’s base. Hexadecimal assigns each position a successive power of 16.
Memory address: A number identifying a location in a computer’s memory or address space. Addresses are commonly written in hexadecimal because binary addresses are long.
Decimal: The base-10 numeral system, using digits 0 through 9. Decimal is the everyday base-10 counterpart to hexadecimal.
IBM System/360: A family of compatible mainframe computers announced by IBM in 1964. Its byte-oriented design helped establish hexadecimal as practical machine notation.
Radix: The number of distinct digit values available in a positional numeral system, including zero. Its radix of 16 determines hexadecimal place values.
Color depth: The number of bits used to represent the color of a pixel. Hexadecimal color codes compactly encode channel values.
Octal: The base-8 numeral system, using digits 0 through 7. Octal offers another compact way to group binary digits.
Byte: A unit of digital information, commonly consisting of eight bits. One byte maps neatly to two hexadecimal digits.
Binary number: A number represented in base 2 using only the digits 0 and 1. Four binary digits correspond exactly to one hexadecimal digit.
Uniform Resource Identifier: A character string that identifies a resource, such as a web page or file. Percent-encoding uses hexadecimal digits to represent bytes in URI text.
