Hezbollah

Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shia Islamist political and militant organization founded in 1982. It combines an armed wing with participation in Lebanon’s political system.

1982 Lebanon War: A war beginning with Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in June 1982, followed by prolonged Israeli occupation and conflict. The invasion and occupation helped create the conditions for Hezbollah’s emergence.
Hezbollah armed wing: Hezbollah’s military apparatus, which conducts armed operations and maintains weapons and fighters. It is the organization’s coercive arm, operating alongside its political and social activities.

2006 Lebanon War: A 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and northern Israel in 2006. The war demonstrated Hezbollah’s military capacity and caused extensive destruction in Lebanon.
Abbas al-Musawi: A founding Hezbollah leader who served as secretary-general before being killed in an Israeli airstrike in 1992. His killing preceded Nasrallah’s leadership and became a defining episode in the organization’s history.
Lebanese sovereignty: The authority of the Lebanese state to govern its territory and make independent political and security decisions. Hezbollah’s armed autonomy raises questions about who exercises sovereign power in Lebanon.
