Hib vaccine

A vaccine that protects against invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), including meningitis and pneumonia. It uses the bacterium’s capsule sugar linked to a carrier protein to produce strong immune memory, especially in infants.

Haemophilus influenzae type b: A strain of Haemophilus influenzae whose capsule can cause severe invasive infections, especially in young children. The bacterium’s type b capsule supplies the antigen targeted by the vaccine.
Hib disease: Infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b, including meningitis, pneumonia, epiglottitis, and bloodstream infection. Preventing these invasive infections is the vaccine’s central purpose.
Hib polysaccharide vaccine: An early Hib vaccine made from purified capsular polysaccharide, offering limited protection in children under two. Its weak infant response motivated the conjugate approach used in modern Hib vaccines.
Hib vaccine formulations: Licensed Hib conjugate vaccines distinguished by their carrier proteins and schedules. Different formulations share the target but use different protein carriers.
Polysaccharide–protein conjugate vaccine: A vaccine that links a bacterial sugar antigen to a protein to produce a stronger, T-cell-dependent immune response. Hib vaccine pioneered this design to make capsule sugars effective in infants.

John Robbins: An American pediatrician and microbiologist whose research helped establish the basis for Hib conjugate vaccines. His work showed how linking Hib polysaccharide to protein could improve protection in young children.
Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine: A conjugate vaccine that protects against disease caused by selected serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It uses a related conjugate strategy against a different encapsulated bacterium.
Capsular polysaccharide: A chain of sugar molecules forming an outer capsule that helps some bacteria evade immune defenses. Hib vaccine targets the bacterium’s distinctive capsule sugar.
Herd immunity: Indirect protection that occurs when enough people are immune to reduce transmission in a population. High Hib vaccine coverage also reduces circulation and protects people not fully immunized.
