Hiero II of Syracuse

Hiero II ruled Syracuse from about 270 to 215 BCE and allied with Rome during the First Punic War. His long reign brought political stability and prosperity to the city.

Syracuse: An ancient Greek city on Sicily’s southeastern coast, later a major power in the western Mediterranean. Hiero made this city the center of his kingdom and its political stability.
Treaty between Rome and Syracuse: An agreement that established the terms of Syracuse’s alliance with Rome during the First Punic War. The treaty formalized Hiero’s support for Rome while preserving his rule.
Archimedes: A Greek mathematician, engineer, and inventor from Syracuse who lived in the third century BCE. He worked in Hiero’s Syracuse and was associated with the king’s engineering projects.

Second Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage from 218 to 201 BCE, fought across the western Mediterranean. Syracuse’s defection during this war overturned Hiero’s pro-Roman policy.
Mamertines: Mercenaries of Campanian origin who seized Messana in Sicily and helped trigger the First Punic War. Their conflict with Syracuse drew Rome and Carthage into Sicily’s struggle.
Syracusan monarchy: The system of single-ruler government used by Syracuse at several points in its ancient history. Hiero ruled through this institution while maintaining a degree of independence from Rome.
