Higgs mechanism

The Higgs mechanism generates masses for certain elementary particles through their interaction with the Higgs field. In gauge theories, it allows massive gauge bosons while preserving gauge symmetry.

Higgs field: A scalar field whose nonzero vacuum expectation value gives masses to elementary particles through interactions. Its nonzero vacuum value is the background that makes the mechanism operate.
Gauge theory: A field theory whose descriptions remain invariant under specified local transformations. The mechanism is notable for producing masses without abandoning this underlying symmetry.
François Englert: Belgian theoretical physicist who co-developed a 1964 mechanism for generating particle masses in gauge theories. His work with Robert Brout introduced a version of the mechanism.
Fermion mass: The mass of a fermion, such as a quark or lepton, arising in the Standard Model from its Higgs-field coupling. The mechanism connects each fermion’s mass to its Yukawa coupling.
Proca theory: A relativistic field theory for a massive spin-one field, with an explicit mass term. Unlike the Higgs mechanism, it inserts vector-boson mass directly rather than generating it through a gauge-invariant field theory.
Spontaneous symmetry breaking: A process in which a system’s lowest-energy state has less symmetry than its governing laws. The Higgs field’s vacuum state breaks electroweak symmetry without explicitly violating gauge symmetry.
Electroweak interaction: The unified theory of electromagnetic and weak interactions, based on the gauge group SU(2) × U(1). The Higgs mechanism gives the weak bosons mass while leaving the photon massless.
Robert Brout: Belgian theoretical physicist who co-developed a 1964 mechanism for generating particle masses in gauge theories. His collaboration with François Englert produced an early formulation.
Higgs boson production: The processes by which particle collisions create Higgs bosons, including gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion. Production rates test how the Higgs field couples to other particles.
Technicolor: A class of proposed theories in which a new strong interaction dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry. It offers a composite alternative to the elementary Higgs field.
