High-pressure area

A region of the atmosphere with pressure higher than its surroundings. It is commonly associated with sinking air, outward surface winds, and settled weather.

Atmospheric pressure: The force per unit area exerted by the weight of air above a location. A high is defined by pressure being greater than at nearby locations.
Bermuda–Azores High: A semipermanent subtropical high-pressure system over the North Atlantic. Its changing position steers winds and storm tracks across the Atlantic.
Low-pressure area: A region of the atmosphere where pressure is lower than in surrounding areas. Air converges and rises around lows, opposite the typical surface flow around a high.
Weather forecasting: The prediction of future atmospheric conditions using observations and models. Forecasters track highs to estimate clear spells, wind shifts, and storm paths.
Pressure gradient force: The force that accelerates air from regions of higher pressure toward regions of lower pressure. It drives air outward from a high-pressure center.
Siberian High: A strong wintertime surface high-pressure system over northern Eurasia. Its cold, dense air produces one of the Northern Hemisphere’s major winter highs.
Cyclone: A rotating weather system with winds circulating around a low-pressure center. Cyclonic circulation is the rotational counterpart to circulation around a high.
Trade winds: Persistent easterly winds that blow from subtropical regions toward the equatorial low-pressure zone. Subtropical highs help drive the trade winds on their equatorward flanks.
Anticyclonic circulation: Large-scale atmospheric rotation around a high-pressure center, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Earth’s rotation turns outward-moving air around the high.
South Atlantic High: A semipermanent subtropical high-pressure system over the South Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the oceanic highs in the subtropical belt.
