High resolution

High resolution is the ability of an image or imaging system to distinguish fine spatial detail. It depends on sampling, optics, contrast, and the method used to assess detail.

Spatial resolution: The ability of a system to distinguish nearby spatial features as separate. This broader measure captures the fine-detail distinction that high resolution describes.
Spatial frequency: The number of repeating light-dark cycles per unit of distance in an image. Fine spatial detail corresponds to high-frequency patterns.
Microscopy: The use of instruments to form images of objects too small to see unaided. Microscope resolution determines which cellular and material structures can be distinguished.
Image size: The number of pixels in a digital image or its dimensions when displayed or printed. A larger image can contain more pixels without resolving more real-world detail.

Image sharpness: The perceived clarity of edges and fine structures in an image. Sharpening can make edges look crisp without restoring unresolved information.
Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem: A theorem stating the sampling conditions needed to reconstruct a band-limited signal. It sets a sampling limit on the spatial frequencies an image can represent.
Image sensor: A device that converts incoming light into electrical signals representing an image. Sensor elements sample the image and constrain its recorded detail.
