Highland Clearances

The Highland Clearances were the forced or economically driven removal of people from rural Scotland, especially during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as landlords reorganized estates for more profitable uses.

Sheep farming: The raising of sheep for wool, meat, or milk. Landlords replaced many tenants with large sheep farms that required fewer workers.
Jacobite rising of 1745: The final major attempt to restore the Stuart dynasty to the British throne, led by Charles Edward Stuart. Its defeat accelerated political and legal changes that reshaped Highland society.
Elizabeth Gordon, Duchess of Sutherland: A Scottish landowner whose estate carried out extensive clearances in Sutherland during the early nineteenth century. Her estate's removals became the best-known and most contested clearance episode.
Sutherland Clearances: A series of early nineteenth-century removals on the Sutherland estate in northern Scotland. These clearances became a defining example of large-scale estate reorganization.

Patrick Sellar: A factor employed on the Sutherland estate who supervised clearances in the early nineteenth century. His role in the 1814 removals and subsequent trial became central to accounts of Sutherland.
Strathnaver: A district in Sutherland whose inhabitants were removed during the early nineteenth-century clearances. Its 1814 removals are remembered for the destruction of homes and the scale of displacement.
Crofting: A Scottish system of small-scale tenant farming, especially associated with the Highlands and islands. Resettled tenants often entered crofting communities with restricted land and grazing access.
