Hilary Mantel

Hilary Mantel (1952–2022) was an English novelist and short-story writer, best known for her historical novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies.

Wolf Hall: Hilary Mantel’s 2009 historical novel follows Thomas Cromwell’s rise in the court of Henry VIII. This novel launched the trilogy that made Mantel internationally prominent.
Free indirect discourse: A narrative technique that blends third-person narration with a character’s idiom and thoughts without quotation marks. Mantel uses it to bring Cromwell’s perceptions close while retaining third-person narration.
Booker Prize: An annual literary award for a novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. Mantel won it for both Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies.
