Hillel the Elder

Hillel the Elder was a Jewish sage and religious leader in Jerusalem around the turn of the first century CE. He became a central figure in Jewish tradition for ethical teachings and biblical interpretation.

Shammai: A Jewish sage who led a school of interpretation often contrasted with Hillel’s. Their schools became the leading, often opposed, interpretive traditions of their era.
Second Temple Judaism: The diverse forms of Jewish religion and society during the Second Temple period, from 516 BCE to 70 CE. Hillel’s life belongs to the final generations before the Temple’s destruction.
