Himalayan cat
The Himalayan cat is a long-haired domestic breed combining the Persian body and coat with Siamese-style colorpoint markings and blue eyes.
Persian cat: A long-haired domestic cat breed known for a broad head, short muzzle, and compact body. The Himalayan inherited its body type and long coat from Persian cats.
Siamese–Persian hybridization: Crossbreeding between Siamese and Persian cats to combine colorpoint markings with a long-haired body type. This breeding approach produced the combination that defines the Himalayan.
Cat grooming: Care of a cat’s coat, skin, claws, and other body needs through brushing and related routines. The Himalayan’s dense long coat requires frequent brushing to limit mats and tangles.
Ragdoll: A large, blue-eyed, semi-longhaired domestic cat breed that commonly has colorpoint markings. Ragdolls share blue eyes and point patterns but differ in body type and breed history.
Siamese cat: A domestic cat breed known for blue eyes, a pale body, and darker colorpoint markings. Siamese ancestry introduced the Himalayan’s colorpoint pattern and blue eyes.
Virginia Cobb: An American cat breeder who worked with Harvard researcher Clyde Keeler on early Siamese–Persian crosses. Cobb helped establish an early breeding program that shaped the Himalayan’s development.
Brachycephalic airway syndrome: Breathing problems associated with shortened skulls and narrowed airways in some flat-faced animals. Himalayans with very short faces can experience breathing difficulties linked to facial structure.
Birman: A blue-eyed, semi-longhaired colorpoint cat breed distinguished by white paws called gloves. Birmans have point coloring like Himalayans but are identified by their white-gloved feet.
Colorpoint: A coat pattern with darker pigment on cooler body regions, including the face, ears, paws, and tail. This temperature-sensitive pattern gives Himalayans their distinctive dark extremities.
Clyde Keeler: An American geneticist who studied coat-color inheritance and collaborated on early Siamese–Persian breeding experiments. Keeler’s genetic research accompanied experiments that helped develop the breed.
