Hindi Belt

The Hindi Belt is a broad region of northern and central India where Hindi and related varieties are widely spoken. Its boundaries are cultural and linguistic rather than fixed administrative lines.

Hindi: Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in northern India and written mainly in Devanagari. It is the region’s principal language and the basis of its name.
Urdu: Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language written in a Perso-Arabic script and used as an official language in Pakistan and India. Its speakers and cultural traditions overlap extensively with Hindi-speaking populations.
Hindi–Urdu controversy: The Hindi–Urdu controversy concerns the political and cultural differentiation of closely related language varieties in South Asia. Its language choices shaped public institutions and identities across much of the belt.
Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh is a populous state in northern India, with Lucknow as its capital. It is a central example of the belt’s linguistic and political weight.
Hindustani language: Hindustani is a linguistic continuum historically associated with Hindi and Urdu, especially in its colloquial forms. It helps explain the shared speech forms and cultural connections that cross the Hindi–Urdu divide.
Punjabi language: Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Punjab and written in Gurmukhi in India and Shahmukhi in Pakistan. It marks a major linguistic neighbor to the northwest, though boundaries and bilingualism complicate the divide.
Hindi imposition: Hindi imposition is the political objection that promoting Hindi can disadvantage speakers of other Indian languages. Debates over national language policy often frame the belt as Hindi’s political heartland.
Bihar: Bihar is a state in eastern India, with Patna as its capital. Its speech includes varieties such as Bhojpuri and Maithili, exposing the limits of simple Hindi labels.
Indo-Aryan languages: Indo-Aryan languages form a major branch of the Indo-European language family, spoken chiefly across South Asia. Most languages and varieties associated with the belt belong to this branch.
Gujarati language: Gujarati is an Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Gujarat and written in the Gujarati script. It borders Hindi-speaking areas to the west while retaining a distinct regional language identity.
