Hindlimb

A hindlimb is a vertebrate’s rear appendage, including its bones, joints, and muscles. In tetrapods, it supports movement and bears weight, though its form varies with locomotion.

Pelvic girdle: The skeletal structure that attaches the hindlimbs to the vertebral column. It anchors each hindlimb to the trunk and transfers forces between them.
Hip joint: The ball-and-socket joint connecting the femur to the pelvis in many tetrapods. It directs hindlimb movement while transmitting force to the trunk.
Bipedalism: A mode of locomotion in which an animal moves primarily on two legs. In humans, the hindlimbs support the body and drive upright walking.
Forelimb: A vertebrate’s front appendage, including its bones, joints, and muscles. It occupies the opposite end of the trunk and often has different functions.
Femur: The thigh bone, extending from the hip to the knee in tetrapods. It is the largest proximal bone of the typical hindlimb.
Ankle: The joint complex connecting the lower leg to the foot. Its motion helps position the foot and propel the body.
Running: A form of locomotion in which each stride includes a phase with no feet on the ground. Hindlimb muscles and tendons store and return energy during many running gaits.
Fin: A flexible or supported appendage used by aquatic animals for movement or stability. Fins perform some locomotor roles of limbs without the same tetrapod structure.
Tibia: The larger, medial bone of the lower leg in tetrapods. It carries much of the load between knee and ankle.
Skeletal muscle: Voluntary, striated muscle tissue that moves bones by contracting across joints. Hindlimb muscles generate the forces that move its bones.
