Hindu Shahis

The Hindu Shahis were a dynasty that ruled Kabul, Gandhara, and parts of northwestern India from the ninth to the eleventh century, resisting expanding Muslim powers from Central Asia.

Kabul Shahi dynasty: A dynasty that ruled Kabul and neighboring regions before the Hindu Shahis. The Hindu Shahis emerged from this earlier ruling house after its last known ruler was displaced.
Jayapala: A Hindu Shahi king who fought the Ghaznavids in the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. His wars with Sebuktigin and Mahmud marked the dynasty’s first major losses to Ghaznavid power.
Hindu Kush: A mountain range separating much of Afghanistan from northern South Asia. Its passes shaped the routes through which armies entered the Shahi frontier.
Ghaznavid Empire: A Persianate Muslim empire centered on Ghazni that ruled parts of Central and South Asia from the tenth to twelfth centuries. Its expansion absorbed the Hindu Shahi kingdom and established Ghaznavid rule across the frontier.
Kallar: A Hindu Shahi ruler traditionally credited with founding the dynasty in the ninth century. Later accounts trace the dynasty’s establishment to Kallar’s seizure of power.
Anandapala: A Hindu Shahi king who led resistance against Mahmud of Ghazni in the early eleventh century. He rallied a coalition of Indian rulers against Mahmud at the Battle of Waihind.
Khyber Pass: A mountain pass connecting the Peshawar valley with Kabul and eastern Afghanistan. Control of this corridor linked the dynasty’s western territories to Gandhara.
Ghazni: A city in present-day Afghanistan that served as the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire. Ghazni was the base from which the Shahis’ most powerful adversaries launched campaigns.
Al-Baladhuri: A ninth-century Arab historian whose writings describe the early Muslim conquests in South and Central Asia. His account records the earlier Arab capture of Kabul that preceded Hindu Shahi rule.
Trilochanapala: A Hindu Shahi ruler who continued resistance to Ghaznavid expansion after Anandapala. His campaigns represent the dynasty’s struggle after its major defeat at Waihind.
