Hinterland

A hinterland is an inland area behind a coast or port, often connected to it economically or dependent on it for access to trade.

Port: A maritime facility where ships load and unload passengers or cargo. A port serves as the coastal gateway through which a hinterland reaches maritime trade.
Coastal zone: The area where land and sea interact, including adjacent land and marine environments. A hinterland is defined in relation to a coast and its access points.
Port of Rotterdam: A major European seaport in the Netherlands, connected to inland markets by river, rail, road, and pipeline. Its extensive inland connections illustrate how a port can serve a large hinterland.
Core–periphery model: A model describing unequal economic relationships between central, powerful regions and dependent peripheral regions. Port-centered trade can reinforce a core’s control over its inland periphery.
Hinterland access: The ease with which an inland area can reach a port or other gateway to trade. Transport links determine which inland places fall within a port’s economic reach.
Drainage basin: The land area that drains precipitation into a common river or outlet. Its watershed boundary is physical, unlike a hinterland boundary shaped by trade and transport.
Rhine–Main–Danube Canal: A waterway linking the Rhine and Danube river basins across central Europe. It expanded navigable connections between the North Sea and inland European regions.
Economic geography: The study of where economic activities occur and how places are connected through them. Hinterlands show how geography and trade shape regional economic relationships.
Hinterland competition: Rivalry among ports or trade gateways to serve the same inland markets. Competing ports may divide or contest the hinterland’s trade.
Market area: A geographic region in which customers obtain goods or services from a particular center. Economic hinterlands often function as the market areas of ports or cities.
