Hippodrome of Constantinople

An ancient chariot-racing arena in Constantinople that also hosted public ceremonies and political gatherings. Its former site is now Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul.

Roman circus: A Roman venue for chariot races, typically built as a long track with a central barrier and tiered seating. The Constantinopolitan arena adapted the Roman circus plan for the imperial capital.
Serpent Column: An ancient Greek bronze monument formed from three intertwined serpents, originally dedicated at Delphi. Moved to Constantinople, it stood among the Hippodrome’s central monuments.

Justinian I: Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565 who pursued legal reform, military expansion, and major building projects. His rule was tested by the Nika riots, in which the Hippodrome crowd played a central role.
Chariot racing: A competitive sport in which teams drive horse-drawn chariots around a course. Racing was the Hippodrome’s principal spectacle and its reason for being built.
Walled Obelisk: A stone obelisk built in the Hippodrome of Constantinople, later covered with bronze plaques that were stripped away. It formed another landmark on the arena’s central barrier.
