Hippolyte Bayard

Hippolyte Bayard (1801–1887) was a French photographer who independently developed a direct-positive process producing photographs on paper. He also made one of photography’s earliest self-portraits.

Direct positive: A photographic image produced as a positive without first making a negative. Bayard’s process made a positive image directly on paper.
Photography: The creation of images by recording light, commonly on a photosensitive surface or sensor. Bayard’s experiments formed part of photography’s earliest development.
