Historical causation

Historical causation is the analysis of how and why past events and changes occurred. It examines interactions among conditions, decisions, structures, and chance over time.

Causal mechanism: A sequence of processes through which one condition or event produces an effect. It specifies the intervening processes that connect historical conditions to outcomes.
Counterfactual history: The study of plausible alternative pasts used to examine how events depended on particular causes. It tests whether an alleged cause would have changed the outcome if absent.
Great man theory: A theory that attributes major historical change chiefly to the actions of exceptional individuals. It contrasts with explanations centered on broad conditions and interacting causes.
French Revolution: A period of political and social upheaval in France beginning in 1789 that ended the monarchy and transformed Europe. Its competing explanations weigh fiscal crisis, social conflict, political choices, and ideas.
Historical explanation: An account of why a past event or change occurred, supported by evidence and argument. It raises the question of what makes a causal account persuasive rather than merely descriptive.
Triggering event: An event that helps initiate a larger process or brings latent tensions into action. It distinguishes an immediate catalyst from deeper causes of historical change.
Causal inference: The process of estimating whether and how one factor causes an outcome. It supplies general tools for distinguishing causal effects from mere association.
Historical materialism: A theory of history that emphasizes material production and class relations as drivers of social change. It offers a structural account of causation grounded in economic relations.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918, involving the major powers of Europe and their allies. Its outbreak is explained through both the assassination crisis and longer-term rivalries.
Historical determinism: The view that historical outcomes follow inevitably from prior conditions or laws. It marks the limit case against which contingency and human choice are often judged.
