Historical determinism

Historical determinism is the view that historical events follow necessarily from prior forces or conditions. It treats the course of history as constrained or fixed by antecedent causes rather than open to contingency.

Causal determinism: The view that every event is necessitated by prior conditions and the laws governing them. Historical determinism applies this general claim to events and processes across time.
Historical contingency: The dependence of historical outcomes on events that could have unfolded differently. It challenges the claim that a particular outcome had to occur.
Augustine of Hippo: A Christian theologian and philosopher whose works shaped Western accounts of providence and history. His providential account framed history as governed by divine purpose, an influential alternative source of necessity.
Whig history: A style of history that presents the past as a steady progression toward liberal institutions and modernity. Its progress narrative can turn contingent victories into apparently inevitable stages.
Economic determinism: The view that economic structures or material conditions determine other features of society and history. It makes economic relations the decisive force behind historical change.
Free will: The capacity of agents to choose among alternatives in a way relevant to responsibility. Human choice raises the question of whether historical actions are genuinely open.
Giambattista Vico: An Italian philosopher who argued that human societies develop through recurring historical patterns. His account of recurring courses and recourses offered a patterned alternative to linear progress.
Historicism: The approach that interprets ideas and institutions through their specific historical contexts and development. Its emphasis on historical development can support claims about laws or patterns governing change.
Technological determinism: The view that technology drives social and historical change in a largely autonomous way. It assigns technological development a determining role in the historical sequence.
Great man theory: The theory that influential individuals are the primary drivers of historical change. It locates historical change in individual agency rather than impersonal necessity.
