Historical epidemiology

Historical epidemiology studies past disease patterns and epidemics by combining historical records with epidemiological methods. It examines how disease, populations, and environments changed over time.

Epidemiology: The study of the distribution and causes of health conditions in populations. Historical epidemiology adapts population-level methods to evidence from the past.
Epidemic curve: A graph showing new cases or deaths over time during an outbreak. Dated deaths and case reports can reveal an outbreak’s timing and shape.
Black Death: The devastating pandemic that spread across Eurasia and North Africa in the mid-fourteenth century. Its demographic impact is reconstructed from chronicles, burial evidence, and population records.
Retrospective diagnosis: The inference of a past disease diagnosis from records or remains created without modern diagnostic methods. It is central when historical descriptions do not map neatly onto present-day disease categories.
Historical demography: The study of population size, structure, and change in past societies. Population estimates help establish who was exposed and how mortality altered communities.
Excess mortality: Deaths above the number expected for a population and period under ordinary conditions. It can estimate epidemic impact when records do not identify specific diseases.
1918 influenza pandemic: A global influenza pandemic that caused substantial mortality from 1918 to 1920. Historical death records expose large differences in timing and severity between populations.
Historical disease ecology: The study of interactions among diseases, hosts, environments, and societies across time. Environmental and social changes may explain patterns that pathogen-focused accounts miss.
Paleopathology: The study of disease in ancient populations through skeletal and other biological remains. Human remains can corroborate or challenge diagnoses inferred from written accounts.
Cause-specific mortality: The rate of death attributed to a particular cause in a population. Comparing causes can distinguish epidemic shocks from ongoing mortality patterns.
