Historical novel

A work of prose fiction set in a period before its composition and shaped by the social, political, or material conditions of that past.

Historical fiction: Fiction set in a past period whose setting or events draw on historical knowledge. The broader category includes historical novels as well as historical fiction in other forms.
Historical contextualization: The placement of people, events, and ideas within the conditions that shaped them historically. Context makes a character’s conduct intelligible within the novel’s chosen period.
Walter Scott: A Scottish novelist whose historical romances helped establish the historical novel as a major literary form. His fiction made social change and conflicts between historical periods central to the genre.
War and Peace: Leo Tolstoy’s novel following Russian families during the Napoleonic invasion of Russia and its aftermath. It interweaves private lives with military events and challenges accounts centered on great men.
