Historical race concepts

Historical race concepts are changing systems for classifying human groups by ancestry, appearance, or presumed inherited traits. They reflect the knowledge, institutions, and power relations of the periods in which they developed.

Ancient Greek ethnography: Ancient Greek writing that described peoples through customs, geography, and bodily characteristics. Greek accounts linked human differences to climate and geography before modern racial taxonomies.
Race: A social classification of people that often draws on perceived ancestry and physical traits. Historical systems supplied changing rules for deciding which groups counted as races.
Johann Friedrich Blumenbach: The German physician and naturalist who proposed five human varieties in the late eighteenth century. His taxonomy helped popularize the idea of a small number of named human divisions.
Racialization: The process of assigning racial meaning to people, practices, or social relations. Historical taxonomies gave institutions categories through which to racialize populations.
European colonialism: European overseas expansion and rule over territories and peoples from the fifteenth century onward. Colonial rule made classifications of human difference tools for governing and exploiting populations.
Typology: A method that organizes people or phenomena into types based on selected shared features. Racial taxonomies treated selected traits as markers of supposedly stable human types.
Samuel George Morton: The American physician whose skull measurements were used to argue for racial differences in intelligence. Morton’s cranial measurements became a prominent example of purported quantitative racial evidence.
One-drop rule: A rule that classified people with any known African ancestry as Black, especially in the United States. It shows how legal systems could define race through ancestry rather than appearance alone.
Transatlantic slave trade: The forced transportation of millions of Africans to the Americas between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Hereditary racial categories helped justify enslavement and its transmission across generations.
Monogenism: The belief that all humans descend from a single common origin. Some monogenists explained human differences through environment rather than separate origins.
