The history of Albania traces the societies and political powers of the western Balkans from antiquity through the modern Albanian state.

Illyrians: Ancient peoples who lived across much of the western Balkans, including areas of modern Albania. They are central to Albanian historical narratives about the region’s ancient past.
Ottoman Albania: The Albanian-inhabited territories governed within the Ottoman Empire from the late fourteenth century into the early twentieth century. Imperial administration and social change shaped the period before independence.

Albanian Declaration of Independence: The declaration proclaimed at Vlorë on 28 November 1912, establishing Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. It created the modern state amid the Balkan Wars.
