History of Angola

The history of Angola traces the societies and states of the region, Portuguese colonial rule, independence in 1975, civil war, and later political and social change.

Kingdom of Kongo: A Central African kingdom founded before European contact, whose territories included parts of present-day Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its rulers shaped northern Angola before Portuguese conquest and remained influential during early colonial encounters.
Atlantic slave trade: The forced transportation of millions of Africans across the Atlantic from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries. Portuguese trade from Angolan ports made the region a major source of enslaved people.
Angolan independence: The establishment of the independent Republic of Angola on 11 November 1975 after Portuguese colonial rule. Independence ended colonial sovereignty but was followed immediately by a struggle over the new state.
Queen Njinga: A seventeenth-century ruler of Ndongo and Matamba who resisted Portuguese expansion in present-day Angola. Her diplomacy and military resistance became enduring symbols of opposition to Portuguese power.
Angolan Civil War casualties: The human losses and displacement caused by Angola’s civil war from 1975 to 2002. Incomplete records and contested estimates complicate accounts of the war’s social cost.
Portuguese Angola: The Portuguese colony that occupied the territory of present-day Angola from the sixteenth century until independence in 1975. Colonial rule reorganized land, labor, trade, and political authority across the territory.
Scramble for Africa: The late nineteenth-century European partition and occupation of most of Africa. Its imperial competition helped establish Portugal’s territorial claims over Angola.
Luanda: The capital and largest city of Angola, situated on the Atlantic coast. Its political institutions and rapid growth reflect the country’s changing fortunes since independence.
Agostinho Neto: An Angolan poet, physician, and MPLA leader who became the country’s first president in 1975. He led the MPLA during the transition from colonial rule to independence.
Angolan land mines: Explosive remnants of Angola’s civil war that have killed and injured civilians and obstructed land use. Their lasting danger shows how wartime violence persisted after the 2002 peace.
