History of Antarctica

The history of Antarctica traces its discovery, exploration, scientific research, territorial claims, and international governance, from early voyages to the Antarctic Treaty System.

Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration: The period of intense Antarctic exploration from the late nineteenth century to the early 1920s. Its expeditions brought Antarctic exploration into public view and culminated in Scott and Amundsen’s race to the South Pole.
Terra Australis: A hypothetical southern continent imagined by ancient and early modern geographers to balance the lands of the Northern Hemisphere. The long-standing idea preceded reliable knowledge of Antarctica and shaped expectations about southern exploration.
Ernest Shackleton: An Anglo-Irish explorer who led Antarctic expeditions in the early twentieth century. His leadership during the stranded Endurance expedition became a defining episode of exploration history.
Antarctic research station: A facility in Antarctica used for scientific research and logistical support. Permanent and seasonal stations make sustained research possible despite the continent’s isolation.
