History of Argentina

The history of Argentina encompasses Indigenous societies, Spanish colonization, independence, state formation, and the country’s political, economic, and social changes through the present day.

Indigenous peoples of Argentina: The diverse Indigenous peoples who have lived across the territory of present-day Argentina since before European colonization. Their societies predated Spanish rule and remain part of Argentina’s history and present.
Argentine War of Independence: The armed struggle from 1810 to 1818 in which revolutionary forces in the Río de la Plata sought independence from Spain. It transformed the May Revolution’s break with viceregal authority into a military independence struggle.
José de San Martín: An Argentine-born military leader who helped secure independence for Argentina, Chile, and Peru from Spanish rule. His campaigns across the Andes were central to the liberation of Spanish South America.
Argentine Great Depression: The prolonged economic decline that began in Argentina in 1998 and culminated in a severe crisis in 2001–2002. The collapse discredited economic policies and brought mass protests and political upheaval.
Argentine Confederation: The Argentine political entity formed by provinces outside Buenos Aires between 1831 and 1861. Its rivalry with Buenos Aires centered on control of customs revenue and national authority.
Spanish colonization of the Americas: The conquest and colonial rule imposed by Spain across much of the Americas from the late fifteenth century onward. Spanish expansion brought the institutions and settlements that shaped colonial Argentina.
Argentine Civil Wars: A series of armed conflicts in the nineteenth century between rival Argentine provinces and political factions. Disputes over federalism and Buenos Aires’ power delayed national political consolidation.
Juan Manuel de Rosas: A Buenos Aires governor and Argentine political leader who dominated the Confederation during much of the 1830s and 1840s. His rule exposed the conflict between provincial power and national political unity.
Dirty War: The state campaign of repression, forced disappearance, torture, and murder carried out by Argentina’s military dictatorship, chiefly from 1976 to 1983. Its crimes remain central to Argentina’s human-rights struggles and democratic memory.
Unitarios and Federales: Rival nineteenth-century Argentine political factions, with Unitarios favoring centralized rule and Federales defending provincial autonomy. Their opposing visions drove civil wars and shaped debates over the constitution.
