History of Austria

The history of Austria traces the territory and political entity from prehistoric settlements through Habsburg rule to the modern republic established in 1918.

March of Austria: A frontier territory established in the eastern part of the Carolingian Empire in 976. This eastern march became the territorial core from which Austria developed.
Habsburg Monarchy: The composite monarchy ruled by the House of Habsburg across Central Europe until 1918. Its dynastic structure held Austria’s diverse lands together before the empire’s collapse.
Rudolf I of Germany: The first Habsburg king of the Romans, elected in 1273 and founder of the dynasty’s lasting Austrian power. His victory at the Battle on the Marchfeld secured the Habsburgs’ Austrian lands.

First Austrian Republic: The Austrian state established in 1918 and replaced by the authoritarian regime of 1934. Its political and economic instability shaped the republic’s interwar history.
Battle of Königgrätz: The decisive 1866 battle in which Prussia defeated Austria during the Austro-Prussian War. The defeat accelerated Austria’s exclusion from German affairs.
