History of Belize

The history of Belize spans ancient Maya societies, Spanish and British imperial claims, British colonial rule, and independence in 1981.

Maya civilization: A Mesoamerican civilization whose societies built cities, developed writing, and flourished across several historical periods. Maya communities built major settlements in the territory now called Belize long before European colonization.
British Honduras: The British colony on the Caribbean coast of Central America renamed Belize in 1973. Its colonial institutions formed the immediate political predecessor of independent Belize.
