History of Bihar

The history of Bihar traces the region’s ancient kingdoms and empires, its changing religious and political landscape, and its development as a modern Indian state.

Magadha: An ancient kingdom in the eastern Gangetic plain that became a major center of political power in South Asia. Its rise anchored Bihar’s early political history and provided a base for later empires.
Buddhism: A religious and philosophical tradition founded on the teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama. Bihar contains places central to the Buddha’s life and the tradition’s early development.
Gupta Empire: An ancient Indian empire that ruled much of northern India from the fourth to sixth centuries CE. Gupta power grew from the Magadha region and made Bihar part of a major imperial center.
Permanent Settlement: A British land-revenue system introduced in Bengal in 1793 that fixed revenue demands on zamindars. Its application in Bihar reshaped landholding and rural power.
Mahavira: The twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jain tradition, who lived in ancient India and taught a path of nonviolence and liberation. His traditional association with the region connects Bihar’s history to Jainism’s formative period.
Mahajanapadas: The sixteen major territorial states of northern India described in early Buddhist and Jain texts. Magadha’s emergence among these states marks the region’s transition from smaller polities to imperial power.
Jainism: An Indian religious tradition emphasizing nonviolence, self-discipline, and liberation from rebirth. The region was a major setting for Mahavira’s life and early Jain communities.
Delhi Sultanate: A succession of Muslim dynasties that ruled large parts of the Indian subcontinent from Delhi between 1206 and 1526. Its expansion reshaped political authority in Bihar after the early medieval kingdoms.
Indigo revolt: A nineteenth-century uprising by cultivators in Bengal against coercive indigo cultivation and planter practices. Indigo cultivation and planter coercion also generated protest in Bihar’s Champaran district.
Gautama Buddha: A spiritual teacher whose teachings became the foundation of Buddhism. His life and enlightenment sites made Bihar central to Buddhist sacred geography.
