History of biology

The history of biology traces how people have studied living things and how biological ideas, practices, institutions, and discoveries changed over time.

Aristotle's biology: Aristotle's observations and explanations of animals, reproduction, classification, and the living world. His systematic animal studies shaped biological inquiry for centuries.
Microscopy: The use of microscopes to observe structures too small to see with the unaided eye. Microscopes made cells and microorganisms visible as objects of biological study.
William Harvey: An English physician who described the circulation of blood through the body in the seventeenth century. His experiments helped establish quantitative physiology as a way to study living bodies.
Germ theory of disease: The theory that many diseases are caused by specific microorganisms. It redirected disease prevention toward identifying and controlling infectious agents.
