History of Bolivia

The history of Bolivia spans Indigenous societies, Spanish colonial rule, independence in 1825, and the republic’s continuing political and social transformations.

Tiwanaku: A pre-Columbian Andean civilization centered near Lake Titicaca that flourished from roughly 500 to 1000 CE. Its highland state and monumental center predate Spanish rule by centuries.
Silver mining in Potosí: The extraction of silver from Cerro Rico, which made Potosí one of the Spanish Empire’s most productive mining centers. Colonial wealth and labor systems developed around this industry.
Simón Bolívar: A Venezuelan military and political leader who helped secure independence for several South American countries. Bolivia took its name from him after independence.
Wari civilization: A pre-Inca Andean state centered in present-day Peru that expanded its influence across parts of the central Andes. Its regional reach provides context for political complexity before the Inca period.
Peru–Bolivian Confederation: A short-lived confederation of Bolivia and Peru established under Andrés de Santa Cruz from 1836 to 1839. It offered a regional alternative to separate republics but ended after military defeat.
Inca Empire: A large Andean empire that expanded across western South America before the Spanish conquest. Inca rule incorporated parts of present-day Bolivia before Spain took control.
Mita: A rotating labor draft imposed on Indigenous communities in the Andes, adapted by Spanish authorities for mining and other work. Its colonial form compelled Indigenous labor in Potosí’s silver mines.
Andrés de Santa Cruz: A Bolivian military and political leader who served as president and established the Peru–Bolivian Confederation. His confederation briefly joined Bolivia and Peru in the 1830s.
Aymara people: An Indigenous people of the central Andes, with communities in Bolivia, Peru, and Chile and a widely spoken Aymara language. Aymara communities shaped the highland societies that preceded and survived colonial rule.
Bolivian military dictatorship: Periods of military authoritarian rule in Bolivia, including the dictatorship of Hugo Banzer from 1971 to 1978. Military rule repeatedly interrupted civilian government and suppressed political opposition.
