History of Catalonia

The historical development of Catalonia from ancient settlement and Roman rule through medieval state formation, changing relations with Spain, and modern autonomy.

Iberians: Ancient peoples of the eastern Iberian Peninsula who spoke related languages before Roman rule. Iberian communities inhabited parts of present-day Catalonia before Rome conquered the region.
Corts Catalanes: A representative assembly of Catalonia’s estates that negotiated laws and taxation with the ruler. The Corts embodied Catalonia’s negotiated institutions within the Crown of Aragon.
Reapers' War: A 1640–1652 revolt in Catalonia against royal policies and the presence of Spanish troops. The revolt exposed tensions between Catalan institutions and the monarchy before the later succession war.
Wilfred the Hairy: A ninth-century count of Barcelona whose family established a hereditary line of rule. His dynasty strengthened the county that later anchored Catalan political development.
Catalan language: A Romance language spoken in Catalonia and other parts of Spain, France, Andorra, and Italy. Its public status has shifted with the region’s changing regimes and institutions.
Roman Hispania: The territories of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Rome from the late third century BCE onward. Roman provincial rule integrated Catalonia into a wider political and cultural system.
Usatges of Barcelona: A medieval collection of legal customs and statutes that became a foundational source of Catalan law. These laws helped define the jurisdiction and customary rights of medieval Catalonia.
War of the Spanish Succession: A European conflict from 1701 to 1714 over who would inherit the Spanish monarchy. Catalonia’s defeat on the Bourbon side of the conflict led to the loss of its institutions.
James I of Aragon: A thirteenth-century king of Aragon who expanded his realms into Mallorca and Valencia. His reign extended the power of the Crown of Aragon, in which Catalonia held a central role.
Catalan nationalism: A political movement asserting Catalonia’s distinct nationhood and seeking greater self-government or independence. It draws on historical institutions and contested interpretations of Catalonia’s political past.
