History of Central Asia

The history of Central Asia traces the peoples, states, cultures, and exchanges of the region linking Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia.

Silk Road: A network of land and sea routes that connected East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Its routes made Central Asia a hub of commerce, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
Eurasian Steppe: A vast belt of grassland stretching across Eurasia, historically traversed by pastoral nomads and armies. Its ecology supported mobile societies whose power often crossed settled borders.
Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex: A Bronze Age society centered in the oases of southern Central Asia during the third and second millennia BCE. Its settlements and material culture provide evidence for early oasis communities.

Andronovo culture: A broad Bronze Age archaeological culture of the Eurasian steppe, associated with pastoral communities. Its spread helps trace changes in steppe lifeways across Central Asia.
Timur: A Central Asian ruler who founded the Timurid Empire and conquered much of western and southern Asia. His campaigns and patronage made Samarkand a major imperial center.
Basmachi movement: An armed resistance to Soviet rule in Central Asia, strongest during the 1910s and 1920s. It reveals local opposition to revolutionary rule and state-building.
