History of Chad

The history of Chad encompasses the region’s ancient states, French colonial rule, independence in 1960, and subsequent political conflict and change.

Kanem–Bornu Empire: A long-lived state in the Lake Chad basin that connected trans-Saharan trade routes and Sahelian societies. Its rise established a regional political tradition that shaped Chad’s precolonial history.
Chadian Armed Forces: The military institutions responsible for Chad’s national defense and a major force in its political history. Control of the armed forces has often determined who governs.
François Tombalbaye: Chad’s first president, who governed from independence in 1960 until his overthrow and death in 1975. His centralizing policies and repression preceded the 1965 insurgency.
French colonialism in Chad: French conquest and administration of Chad from the early twentieth century until independence in 1960. Colonial rule shaped the territory’s institutions, economy, and regional inequalities.
Wadai Empire: A nineteenth-century state centered in eastern Chad, strengthened by trade and Islamic institutions. Its expansion brought eastern Chad into a powerful precolonial empire.
Chad–Libya conflict: A series of confrontations between Chad and Libya from the 1970s to the 1980s, centered partly on the Aouzou Strip. Libyan intervention internationalized Chad’s internal conflicts.
Hissène Habré: Chad’s president from 1982 to 1990, later convicted of crimes against humanity and war crimes. His rule combined military consolidation with severe political violence.
Sara people: A group of related peoples concentrated in southern Chad, including communities with distinct languages and cultural traditions. Colonial recruitment and early postcolonial power concentrated disproportionately in the south.
Rabih az-Zubayr: A Sudanese warlord who conquered the Bornu region and ruled around Lake Chad before French forces defeated him in 1900. His defeat at Kousséri marked the military conquest of the region by France.
Aouzou Strip: A narrow territory in northern Chad claimed by Libya until the International Court of Justice settled the dispute in 1994. The territorial dispute supplied a focal point for Chad–Libya warfare.
