History of chess
The history of chess traces the game from its early South Asian forms through its spread and rule changes to its modern international culture.
Chaturanga: An early South Asian strategy game, usually dated to around the sixth century, regarded as chess’s principal ancestor. Its pieces and four-part army are central to accounts of chess’s Indian origins.
Queen (chess): The most mobile chess piece, able to move any number of squares along ranks, files, or diagonals. The queen’s expanded movement was a defining late-medieval change.
Ruy López de Segura: A sixteenth-century Spanish cleric and chess player who wrote an influential early chess treatise. His work records European chess practice before the modern rules took hold.
World Chess Championship: The contest that determines the reigning world champion in classical over-the-board chess. Its changing format reflects the institutional history of elite chess.

World Chess Championship 1972: The Reykjavík match in which Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky for the world championship. The match became the best-known Cold War episode in chess.
