History of combinatorics

The historical development of combinatorics, the study of counting, arrangements, and discrete structures. Its ideas grew from problems in games, chance, geometry, and mathematical proof.

Pierre de Fermat: A French mathematician whose work shaped number theory, analytic geometry, and early probability. His exchange with Pascal developed methods for reasoning about games of chance.
Königsberg bridge problem: A puzzle asking whether a walk can cross each of Königsberg's seven bridges exactly once. Euler's solution demonstrated how a practical puzzle could reveal a general combinatorial structure.
Extremal combinatorics: The study of largest or smallest possible sizes of discrete structures under constraints. Its growth shifted attention from counting configurations to proving their sharp limits.
