History of Cuba

The history of Cuba encompasses its Indigenous societies, Spanish colonization, struggles for independence, the 1959 revolution, and the development of the modern republic.

Spanish colonization of Cuba: Spain’s conquest and colonial rule of Cuba, beginning in the early sixteenth century and ending in 1898. Spanish rule established the colonial society and economy that later independence movements challenged.
Taíno: An Indigenous Caribbean people whose communities included much of Cuba before Spanish colonization. Taíno communities inhabited Cuba before European conquest and were profoundly disrupted by colonial rule.
Carlos Manuel de Céspedes: A Cuban planter and independence leader who initiated the Ten Years' War in 1868. His revolt began the first major armed challenge to Spanish rule.
United States occupation of Cuba: The U.S. military administration of Cuba from 1898 to 1902 and again from 1906 to 1909. Occupation followed Spain’s defeat and constrained the transition to Cuban self-government.
Ten Years' War: Cuba’s first major war of independence against Spain, fought from 1868 to 1878. Its failed uprising set precedents and exposed divisions within the independence movement.
Christopher Columbus: The Italian navigator whose 1492 expedition reached the Caribbean under the sponsorship of Spain. His 1492 voyage brought Cuba into sustained European contact.
José Martí: A Cuban writer and political thinker who organized the independence movement and died in battle in 1895. His organizing and writings shaped the final war against Spain.
Cuban–American Treaty of Relations: A 1934 treaty that ended the Platt Amendment’s intervention provisions while preserving the U.S. lease of Guantánamo Bay. It altered the legal framework governing Cuban sovereignty and U.S. influence.
Cuban War of Independence: The Cuban uprising against Spanish rule that began in 1895 and ended with Spain’s defeat in 1898. This final independence war brought the United States into Cuba’s struggle against Spain.
Encomienda: A Spanish colonial labor system granting settlers claims to Indigenous tribute and labor. Encomienda organized early colonial extraction from Indigenous Cubans.
