The history of Dagestan traces the changing peoples, states, and institutions of the eastern North Caucasus, shaped by its mountain communities and successive Persian, Arab, Turkic, Russian, and Soviet rule.

Caucasian Albania: An ancient kingdom in the eastern Caucasus, centered largely in present-day Azerbaijan and parts of southern Dagestan. Its northern territories connected early Dagestan to a regional kingdom contested by Rome and Persia.
Caucasus Mountains: A mountain system between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, separating the North Caucasus from the South Caucasus. Rugged terrain helped sustain local autonomy while funneling armies through a few strategic corridors.

Caucasian Albania (polity): An ancient state in the eastern Caucasus, distinct from the modern country of Albania. Its political legacy helps explain early state formation near Dagestan’s southern border.
Ghazi Muhammad: A Dagestani Islamic scholar and the first imam of the nineteenth-century Caucasian imamate, leading resistance from 1829 to 1832. He helped turn reformist Islamic teaching into organized resistance in Dagestan.
Dagestan Oblast: An administrative province of the Russian Empire established in 1860 across much of present-day Dagestan. Its creation formalized imperial rule after the defeat of the mountain resistance.
Caucasian Imamate: A nineteenth-century Islamic state formed in the eastern North Caucasus under leaders including Shamil. Its centralized resistance differed from the dispersed authority of Dagestan’s village communities.
